Maria has been a prisoner for months now being tortured by her cousin Colin Kintober who considers her a traitor to humanity. She desperately tries to get Shadow to remember her but to no avail. She bonds with another prisoner Big The Cat and eventually helps him escape. In the final battle when Shadow has nearly killed Sonic she gets in the way and is killed, but Shadow finally remembers her and she dies in peace having freed her brother from Kintober’s control.
