Jodi Picoult's Small Great Things follows Ruth Jefferson, a Black labor and delivery nurse, who is removed from caring for a newborn because the white supremacist parents don't want a Black person touching their baby; however, when the baby later goes into distress, Ruth hesitates to perform CPR and is charged with murder, leading to a trial that exposes deep-seated racism, privilege, and the complexities of justice, forcing Ruth, her white public defender, and the baby's father to confront their biases and understanding of race and humanity.
