At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1912 to be precise, an expedition set out for South America to investigate a mysterious plateau. The participants are Dr. Georg Edward Challenger, Prof. of Zoology and leader of the expedition, Dr. Arthur Summerlee, Professor of Comparative Anatomy and intellectual rival of Challenger, Lord John Richard Roxton, a world traveler and hunter, Edward 'Ted' Dunn Malone, a reporter and well-known rugby football player, and Marguerite Cox, a wealthy widow and financier of the Expedition.
