Born in Virginia in 1971, Szczesny moved to Maryland at a young age. As a youth, he was often getting into mischief and trouble, thanks to his dysfunctional and abusive toxic family. A high school dropout, he earned his GED and enlisted in the USMC in November 1995, being deployed to Kosovo in June 1999 as a peacekeeper with KFOR and seeing some limited combat. Honorably discharged in November 2000, he returned home to Maryland and applied to the county sheriff's office and was hired in November 2001.
