Five years after the death of Dickie Greenleaf, Tom is married, and living a life of luxury in France. Tom makes his living by operating an art gallery, and selling the paintings of a deceased artist (Derwatt) with several co-conspirators, and a forger (Bernard). The Gallery is threatened when an eagle-eyed American art connosoir (Thomas Murchison) begins to suspect that the gallery is selling forged paintings. His contemporaries doubt him becuase of his humble background, but Murchison is determined to prove that the most recent paintings are forgeries. Tom is made aware of Murchisons presence in Europe, and impersonates Derwatt at an event in order to throw Murchison off their trail. Murchison is still not satisfied, so Tom invites Murchison over to his house in order to discuss the forged paintings. Meanwhile, Dickie Greenleaf's cousin is visiting France, and the Forgery begins to take it's toll on Bernards mind.
