Nikola Hanssen was an ordinary paramedic in New York at the time she gained a mysterious gift from her Russian grandfather in the shape of an orb her grandmother, Adrianna Tereshkova had discovered when she was a Cosmonaut in the USSR. What Nikola didn't know is it was a kind of alien artifact that had been dormant, but it was something that piqued the interest of Harvest, who had taken Nikola, as he had done with others, to study her. The orb bonded to Nikola, and now, she was able to become a being of great power, calling herself Void. As part of the JLA, Nikola is learning to use her powers and help people in a new way.
