Once a prominent cop in the Gotham City Police Department, Renee Montoya endured quite a string of difficulties, from being targeted by Two-Face and being outed as a lesbian by him, but fate found a different path for her when she would meet Charlie Szasz, better known as Vic Sage or the Question. Dying from cancer, Vic helped train Renee, passing on his mantle for her to carry on. Using the substance Pseudoderm, developed by one of Vic's college professors, Professor Aristotle Rodor and a special gas, Renee hides her face as she seeks the truth as the Question.
