Imagined as an animated epic, not live action.

Description of Monkey King (Sun Wukong):

The famed Monkey King of Chinese mythology, Sun Wukong was a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices, until he rebelled against Heaven. Sealed in stone, he was freed by the sage Tripitaka, then joined him and his other disciples Pigsy and Sandy to journey to the west and regain the sacred Sutras. Though he has been quiet in the last few centuries, the rise of superheroes has piqued Wukong's interest, and recently, he has been met by Dr. Mist, an old friend of his, and asked to represent his native China in a new Global Guardians, a role Wukong accepts with gusto and his usual laidback attitude.
