The son of Al Pratt, the original Atom, Grant never knew his parents due to being taken at birth by Symbollix, a company Vandal Savage and Baron Blitzkrieg created to make the ultimate metahuman. Infused with the DNA of much of the JSA and the JLA's founders, Grant was watched until his powers manifested, leading him to be thrust into fighting to defend himself and becoming a hero Supposedly killed during the Blackest Night, the reality of Damage's situation is due to his being "divided" by the mysterious Harvest for his own goals... and what he will learn when he is found by the JLA.
