All it took was a night for the Joker to take everything from her. It's been a year since she lost her legs, and almost 2 since the death of Jason Todd. Bruce has become an alcoholic, Jim Gordon is on the verge of quitting and Dick remains the only support system for her. She's been living a life of misery and can't cope. However, after a run in with a skilled martial artist named Cassandra Cain, Dick convinces Barbara that they have to train her instead of leading the life of a ruthless killer and assassin, to become the new Batgirl... and Barbara to become something better.
