Dr. Robert Bruce Banner, Ph.D. is an American theoretical physicist, famed for his work into the studies of nuclear physics and gamma radiation. He was recruited by General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross and the US Army to develop the first Gamma Bomb. During its first live test, he was exposed to the gamma ray while saving Rick Jones during the detonation of the bomb. Following the event, Banner is transformed into a green rage-fueled monster known as the Hulk when subjected to emotional stress, at or against his will. Fearful of being of the damage that Hulk could conflict, as well as fleeing the military, he went on the run. Banner would later join the Avengers.
