Alice Sebold, 18, is brutally raped and beaten after leaving a college party. Struggling to heal, she eventually identifies Anthony Broadwater as her attacker; he’s arrested and serves 16 years in prison. Haunted by the trauma, Sebold writes a memoir about the ordeal, which becomes a bestseller. She follows it with the acclaimed novel The Lovely Bones, later adapted into a film. When producer Timothy Mucciante begins developing a movie based on her first book, he uncovers troubling inconsistencies: Broadwater was wrongly identified in a police lineup, and the relied-upon hair analysis has since been discredited. Broadwater, released and registered as a offender, rebuilds his life—marries, hopes for children, and endures community stigma. Convinced of his innocence, Mucciante hires a private investigator, shares the findings with Broadwater’s legal team, and funds a motion to overturn the conviction. After nearly forty years, a judge vacates Broadwater’s conviction. Sebold issues a public apology, and Broadwater sues New York for the sixteen years he lost.
