Michael Bernhardt is a former US Army soldier who served in the Vietnam War. A soldier of 1st Platoon, Charlie Company 1st Battalion 20th Infantry, he was the only soldier on the ground at My Lai who refused the order to fire on civilians. Later, he would help expose and detail the massacre in numerous interviews with the press, and he served as a prosecution witness in the trial of Ernest Medina.
