A dark and mysterious figure throughout the series. He works from the shadows, at first using Kamo Serizawa as his servant to observe the progress of Mibu Rōshigumi and the creation of the elixir (a drink that can turn humans into Rasetsu). His ultimate goal, though vague, is to throw society into chaos and conflict. Besides his extreme knowledge and proficient martial arts, his supernaturnal powers are unmatched. However, his evil powers were seen throughout Japan's history. He has also fought Shiroyasha during the Kansei Purge. He leads a cult that practices black magic, using Shikigami familiars to watch over the Rōshigumi and Gintoki's activities
