Joker tricks Superman into killing a pregnant Lois Lane and destroying Metropolis. This event causes Superman to lose his mind and become a dictator. Superman establishes a regime that forces peace on Earth. Many heroes side with him. Batman opposes this tyranny and establishes an underground resistance movement. His goal: to overthrow Superman's regime and restore freedom. The war between the two old friends turns into a bloody civil war between the heroes. Batman fights with his intelligence and strategy, never giving up his principle of never killing. In the end, Batman brings the good Superman from another universe and stops the cruel Superman.
