  • misterwolf Plot: In the slums of American-Japanese city San Fransokyo, teenager Akari Hayami, her older brother Akinobu, and their younger sister Aiya, are classified as orphaned, as their American father Oliver Davis is reported dead, but his killer unverified. Although Akinobu protects both of his sisters, he ends up blaming Akari for their father's death and leaves. With Akari's eighteenth birthday being around the corner, she ultimately decides to raise Aiya on her own.
  • misterwolf Several years later, Akari is now an adult and a master chef, with an ego and an ambition to be the best chef in the city. At night, she is both a professional thief, working for crime lord Obake, and a concerned sister for Aiya, who knows her illegal lifestyle. However, beneath her unscrupulous exterior, she is actually a good person at heart, and she longs to find Akinobu, who has since gone missing after their argument. She also wants a life of freedom with Aiya, wanting to raise her without being a criminal. During a meeting with Obake after a successful robbery, Akari meets his two henchman, Yokai and Globby, for the first time. Obake brings up a case concerning an American who went missing several years ago and expresses her concern about what happened to him. As Akari leaves, she begins to wonder if Oliver is still alive. Encouraged by Aiya, Akari defies Obake's commands to stand down and starts an investigation with the secret approval of Adam Michaelson, a detective.
  • misterwolf Akari is ambushed by Yokai and Globby, but she overpowers them and escapes while narrowly avoiding Obake's incoming droids. Later on, Akari robs several stores for supplies that she intends to use for her journey to find Oliver. As Obake sends Yokai and Globby to find Akari again, Globby takes note of Obake's increasingly cruel behavior. Akari later outruns several lowlife thugs as she makes her way back to the slums where she was raised, knowing it would be the only place where Oliver is if found alive.
  • misterwolf On the phone, Akari tells Aiya to leave the city for a few days, but she refuses and instead goes to the slums with her. Although the two argue, they soon reconcile when they realize that Obake will be after them both. Meanwhile, Globby realizes the error of his ways and renounces Obake before leaving to find Akari. Despite being pursued and followed into the slums by Yokai, Globby is saved at the last minute by Akari, who narrowly leads Aiya and Globby into a safehouse that only she knows. Akari finally allows herself to be emotional and she breaks down into tears, questioning her life choices. Aiya comforts her and Globby reassuringly says "Obake lied to you, kid. Don't blame yourself."
  • misterwolf Akari and the other two eventually find themselves in the home of Akari's entire family, now old and decrepit. Oliver appears before their eyes, and Akari and Aiya embrace him tearfully. Oliver explains that Obake is not the true name of the crime lord Yokai works for; he used to be called Charley Graham, VI, the disgraced son of a wealthy businessman who had falsely believed Obake was a fraud. Obake had killed his father in a fit of rage and then exiled his entire family in retaliation for wronging him. Oliver's family ancestors were rivals Obake's own, and Obake himself was the reason why Oliver had moved down to the slums with his children after his wife had died of a terminal illness. Oliver then reveals that the signature katana and knife that Akari carries were once his, and he gave them up to Obake in exchange for Akari's life, meaning he saved her from Obake's clutches. Obake, having learned through hacked communication within his drones who Akari truly is, sends more drones to capture them all. However, Globby is the only one who escapes, and he crafts a plan to rescue them.
  • misterwolf Back at Obake's tower, Akari is released from her chains, as are her sister and father, by Obake, who strikes a conversation with them, with Yokai in their presence. Obake then signals Yokai to remove his mask, and he is revealed to be Akinobu, having aligned himself with Obake all along. Akinobu explains that he approached Obake after he left so he could find Oliver, and became his loyal henchman to do so. He then apologizes, saying that he should have been there for Akari and Aiya when they needed him most, and Akari forgives him. As Obake locks them back up, Akinobu realizes the kind of man Obake is and has manipulated him for years, and he berates Obake for recruiting Akari and for lying to her, as well as not telling him or her about their blood relation, before leaving his office in remorse. Akinobu is approached by an arriving Globby, who realizes that he is in his side now and tells him about his plan to rescue Akari and the others. They break them out and then fight through several drones, but they are recaptured and both Akinobu and Globby are detained. In a mutation chamber, Obake releases Akari and offers her a choice; if she saves one, the others die, and she can either choose Akinobu, Aiya, or Oliver, while Globby manages to escape a cell he was put in. Ultimately, Akari choose Aiya, and both Akinobu and Oliver express their proudness. While Oliver is killed by lethal injection, Obake cheats and injects Akinobu with a memory wipe serum, mutating him into a superhuman combined with his microbots in the process. Globby arrives in time to escort Aiya away, while Akari stays behind to fight Obake.
  • misterwolf However, Yokai attacks Akari just as Obake escapes and blows up the building, resulting in Akari and Yokai landing in free fall in the water, and Akari is forced to fight him in self-defense. After a long and violent battle that involves Akari protecting innocent lives from her brother, she reluctantly stabs him with her sword, begging for forgiveness as she holds him in her arms. Akinobu regains his memories after his powers wear off, and the two reconcile before he dies.
  • misterwolf In the aftermath, Akari, now using the alias Momakase, something Obake has been calling her, tracks down an underwater base and upon entering it, she confronts Obake. However, Akari cannot bring herself to kill him and leaves, swearing that one day, it will be his reckoning. Akari finally starts a normal life with Aiya while also adopting a new life as a heroic vigilante to help those in dire need. While on patrol, Adam is thanked by Momakase for his help, and he promises to help her when she needs him. Before the end credits, Momakase vows to inspire hope to San Fransokyo and renounces her criminal life and her egotistical and ambitious facade that she used in the past.
