Fedallah is a harpooneer on Ahab's boat, of Indian Zoroastrian descent, and has lived in China. He is hidden on the Pequod and appears when pursuing a whale. Known as Ahab's "Dark Shadow," Ishmael calls him a "fire worshipper," and the crew believes he may be a devil. He provides prophecies about Ahab's fate, including that only "Hemp" can kill him, which happens when a harpoon rope leads to Ahab's drowning.
