Vick meets Ky Markham at one of the Aberration labor camps, and accompanies him to the Outer Provinces for "military service": pretending to occupy abandoned towns in order to divert the Enemy's forces. When Ky proposes a daring escape during a nighttime bombing, the two flee into the Carving, a series of intricate canyons rich with antique materials. This is merely a temporary venture however...Vick longs to find his way back to Laney, the girl he loves.
