Among other penalties, his social status entails exclusion from the Matching pool...so when the Officials tell him of a mistake by which his face appeared on Cassia Reyes' screen, he can't believe it. As he gets to know Cassia better he reveals the tragedies of his past life in the Outer Provinces, including the deaths of his biological parents. When she falls as deeply in love with him as he is with her, he almost believes everything can be made right. But the Society has other plans....
