Mister Fantastic found himself in need of a robot utilizing advanced Xandarian technology, so he sought to collaborate with Master Xar of the Xandarians. Inspired by the earlier cartoon portrayal, he decided to model this new creation after the animated H.E.R.B.I.E. The Fantastic Four, embarking on a quest to locate Galactus for aid against the Sphinx, hoped that H.E.R.B.I.E. would prove instrumental in their search.
