Ex Nihilo was one of the Gardeners created by the Builders, but unlike the rest of them, he did not stop making Gardens upon the advent of the newuniversal superstructure. He and his Abyss created a Garden on Mars but came into conflict with the Avengers when they tried to transform the Earth; their "Mother," Captain Universe, stopped them. When the Builders waged war on the universe, Ex Nihilo and Abyss, along with fellow Builder systems Starbrand and Nightmask, joined the Avengers and helped them defeat their former masters.
