In the six months after Daniel LaRusso won the All-Valley karate tournament, his mentor, Nariyoshi Miyagi, receives a letter telling him that his father is dying. He plans to return to his home of Tomi Village in Okinawa, with Daniel joining him. After arriving in Okinawa, the pair are confronted by Miyagi's old friend turned bitter rival, Sato, and his nephew Chozen, who demand Miyagi partake in a fight to the death, which is what originally caused Miyagi to flee to America.
