Hirohito(裕仁)(b. 29 April 1901) is the current Emperor of Japan. He assumed the throne following the death of his father on 25 December 1926 and is considered the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession dating back nearly 2,600 years. The deceased emperor was posthumously renamed Emperor Taishō a few days later. Following Japanese custom, the new emperor was never referred to by his given name but rather was referred to simply as tennō heika ("His Majesty the Emperor"). It was hoped by many that Hirohito would be more effective than the previous weak emperor (Emperor Taishō suffered from meningitis) and would rebuild Japan after the loss of the Weltkrieg.
