Synopsis

Jailbreak: Shankton State Pen is a 2027 American prison action film directed by Patty Jenkins and produced by Zack Snyder and Jerry Bruckheimer from a screenplay by Jenkins and Frank Darabont. The sequel to Jailbreak and the second installment in the Jailbreak film series, it stars Sasha Calle returning as Elena Diaz, alongside Laurence Fishburne, Nina Dobrev, Eiza González, Chris Hemsworth, and Diego Tinoco, with Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Colin Farrell, and Russell Crowe also returning. The film follows Elena as she decides to rescue her wrongfully convicted siblings from Shankton State Pen, a maximum security prison that is run by the ambitious warden Michael Alberto. The film was released in theaters on December 20th, 2027; like the first film, it was a critical and financial success, grossing over $953 million worldwide against a budget of $127 million. Critics and audiences praised its action sequences, direction, visual style, editing, score, and performances (especially Calle's). It received numerous award nominations, with Calle winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. A sequel is in development.

  • misterwolf Plot: Two years after the HMP Iron Gate breakout, Elena Diaz learns of a newer and much stronger prison, Shankton State Pen, run by the ruthless Michael Alberto. She also learns, but is not surprised, that her younger convict brother Pedro was arrested; unfortunately, so was their older sister Antonia. She deduces that they were wrongfully convicted for manslaughter and several other crimes, and she embarks on a mission to save them.

  • misterwolf Framing herself for murder and assault, Elena is brought to the State Pen, where she reunites with and embraces Antonia, but she is chided by Pedro, who tells her how foolish it was to allow herself to be captured; she admits that the State Pen will be a much more difficult then Iron Gate. After several failed attempts due to the high number of guards and because of Alberto's intelligence, Elena, with Antonia's help, finally discovers a way to escape. The plan is to have an inmate loyal enough to distract the guards long enough for the group to use the vents to leave the prison, and both Elena and Antonia are to cut the fence without the watchtower guards spotting them. Elena's friends Lena Maddox and Henry McConnell, who have joined Elena in prison to aid her, agree to distract the guards.

  • misterwolf To make sure the plans goes off without the guards noticing, Elena contacts Ethan Ford, the man whom she freed from Iron Gate, and instructs him to masquerade as a watchtower guard, as there is an empty watchtower in the prison. He neutralizes a man who was supposed to be assigned to this position as a means to ensure he is employed, and he is hired.

  • misterwolf Under Ethan's watch, Elena and Antonia oversee preparations to escape from the State Pen. Elena starts crying when she thinks of her husband, and explains to Antonia about him being murdered in front of her and their children; Antonia comforts Elena.

  • misterwolf Elena's friend James Evans, who has become a police detective after iron Gate was abandoned, arrives at the State Pen as a double agent for Elena; he discovers that Alberto knows their plans, and informs Elena and Antonia of his knowledge.

  • misterwolf Elena orchestrates several prison riots in the State Pen, with one of them allowing Pedro to escape. Elena and Antonia stay behind to make sure Alberto does not leave the prison alive to ruin more lives. Antonia rigs the warden's office with traps, while Elena and Ethan hide to ambush him. Alberto enters the office and triggers all of the traps, leaving him disfigured; the trio engage him in a brutal fight, with Antonia being seriously injured in her leg leg and knocked unconscious, while Ethan loses his ring finger on his right hand. Elena eventually overpowers Alberto and beheads him with a nearby axe, before she leaks evidence that James took photos of, exonerating Elena's siblings.

  • misterwolf In the aftermath, Ethan, deciding that the Star Pen has its uses due to its strength and difficulty of jailbreaks, takes over as the new warden while Elena lets Antonia live with her and her children. Pedro, still remorseful of his true crimes, deems himself too dangerous to stay in South Dakota and leaves for Florida. Elena happily embraces her sister and children as the end credits roll.
