Gilderoy is a bona fide celebrity with a reputation for charm, or – if you ask the haters – smarm. He appears perfectly plausible as a dashing adventurer who has made a living by writing about his heroic exploits in far-flung places and his good looks have made him a favourite with everyone from tween girls to middle aged housewives. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. Scratch the surface and Mr Lockhart reveals himself to be an incompetent of spectacular proportions, not to mention a pathological liar, remorseless malefactor, and irredeemable coward. His physical trademarks are his award-winning smile and pastel ensembles.
