Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, the "pleasantly plump" teenager Tracy Turnblad pursues stardom as a dancer on "The Corny Collins Show" and becomes one after an audition for the spot. She later attempts to use her fame to champion racial integration on the show while fighting against segregationist, body-shaming antagonists, especially inside and outside the station Corny's show airs on.
