After the veteran Green Lantern Abin Sur becomes obsessed with a forbidden prophecy known as the Blackest Night—foretelling a cosmic war that will begin on Earth and lead to the destruction of all life—he becomes obsessed with preventing it. Manipulated by the imprisoned alien Atrocitus, one of the surviving members of the terrorist group known as the Five Inversions, Abin Sur travels to Earth seeking answers. Meanwhile, a disturbed coroner named William Hand becomes enthralled with death after Atrocitus reveals his role in the prophecy and grants him the Cosmic Divining Rod, a weapon that grows stronger with every life it takes. As Hand descends into madness and unleashes terror on Coast City, Hal must overcome his own doubts and the trauma of his past to become the hero the ring believes he can be. With Sinestro confronting Atrocitus and Hal facing Black Hand in a climactic battle, Hal ultimately embraces the willpower that defines the Green Lanterns, stopping the killer and choosing to leave Earth behind to join the Corps—unaware that the prophecy of the Blackest Night has only just begun.
