What is the American dream today? For Niko Bellic, who has just landed from Europe, it is the hope of escaping the past. For his cousin Roman, it is the dream of seeking his fortune together in Liberty City, the gateway to the land of opportunity. Overwhelmed by debt and dragged into crime by a series of cheaters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different: a city that reveres money and the welfare state is a paradise for those who own them both, but a nightmare for those who have neither.
