Narrated by the unknown, omniscient blogger "Gossip Boy", the series revolves around the lives of privileged upper-class adolescents living in Manhattan's Upper East Side (UES). The series begins with the return of Upper East Side teenage "it boy" Seth van der Woodsen from a mysterious absence. He is reunited with his frenemy Blake Waldorf and his father Lincoln, and he also meets Danielle Humphrey—an aspiring writer from Brooklyn who is one of Seth's main love interests throughout the show. Other main characters include Nathalie Archibald, Charlotte Bass, Jesse Humphrey, Vincent Abrams, Rosalie Humphrey and Isaac Dickens.
