Follows Eddie “Easy” Malone, a smooth-talking jazz trumpeter wrongfully imprisoned during the Great Depression. When he's sentenced to Louisiana’s most notorious prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Eddie finds himself trapped in a brutal system where corruption runs as deep as the swamp surrounding the prison. Inside, the guards are as ruthless as the inmates, and the warden runs an illegal moonshine racket, using select prisoners as enforcers. Eddie’s musical talent draws attention, especially from Big Sam Carter a powerful inmate who sees jazz as a way to keep the peace among prisoners and as a form of subtle resistance against the corrupt system. Big Sam and Eddie form a reluctant partnership, playing jazz in secret gatherings after lights-out. The music becomes a lifeline for Eddie, giving him purpose and offering a rare escape from the bleakness of prison life. However, things take a turn when Deputy Warden Colfax uncovers their secret jazz sessions and offers Eddie a dark deal: if Eddie becomes his informant, he’ll shorten his sentence. But if Eddie refuses, the warden threatens to pin another crime on him, effectively sealing his fate. As Eddie becomes ensnared in the web of corruption, he’s forced to choose between his own freedom and his loyalty to the friends he’s made on the inside.
