Luke Stewart, a young member of a gang who was falsely accused of a crime and imprisoned as a juvenile, was the original Stewart Rhodes. When he was released from prison, his cousin Jim Rhodes' parents took him in after his parents broke their relationship with him. Hal Stark eventually hired him after he changed his name to Stewart Rhodes and started working as an engineer. Stewart gained superhuman strength and the ability to produce the same green energies as the Iron Lantern after being exposed to the energy of Hal's Iron Lantern batteries. To help him focus his energy, he made a ring out of the Iron Lantern armor, and he transformed into the Power Lantern.
