Vanessa (Emma Watson) and Vincent's (Dan Stevens) families have arranged their marriage. Though they like each other, Vanessa is nervous about the ceremony. While she's in a forest practicing her lines for the wedding, a tree branch becomes a hand that drags her to the land of the dead. It belongs to Eric (Benedict Cumberbatch), who was murdered after eloping with his love and wants to marry Vanessa. Vanessa must get back aboveground before Vincent marries the villainous Lydia Bittern (Emma Thompson).
