Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tells the story of volunteers from the magical island of Lumière, who embark on doomed missions to stop the "Paintress" (a grieving mother, Aline), who annually erases people by age via the "Gommage" from a tower's countdown, a curse from her tragedy after her artist son Verso died saving his sister Alysia (now the mute Myel), as the player controls the latest attempt, Expedition 33, fighting corrupted art, uncovering deep family secrets, and trying to break a cycle of creation and destruction fueled by art magic.
