The protagonist of the story is Samantha Mackey, a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Creative Writing student. Samantha arrives at a small, New England, liberal arts, Warren University on a scholarship. There, she meets the Bunnies—a hyperfeminine clique of her peers that she dislikes. Upon her initiation, Samantha discovers a secret; the Bunnies, during what they call "drafting parties," engage in occult practices to transfigure bunnies into boys—creatures they call "Drafts" or "Hybrids or "Darlings.”
