While living in Africa with his scientist parents, Mark and Marie Logan, young Garfield contracted a rare, fatal illness called Sakutia. To save him, his father used an experimental serum derived from a green monkey, which was the only creature known to survive the disease. The serum worked, but it turned his skin, hair, and eyes bright green and granted him the ability to transform into any animal. His parents later died in a boating accident, leaving him orphaned. He was hunted by The Brain and his assistant Monsieur Mallah.
