Derek is an evil man who stole Wayne Enterprises from Bruce and merged it as Wayne-Powers. He had huge plans for Gotham & the world until Terry as Batman intervened, using Powers' own creation - the nerve gas, against him in honor of Warren's death, who he had murdered to cover up his dark secrets in the company. This caused him to mutate alongside radiation, becoming the metahuman Blight. For this, Derek as Blight swore revenge. He would soon learn of Terry's identity and Bruce's involvement and destroy them both.
