Dr. Robert Kirkland "Kirk" Langstrom/Man-Bat is a scientist specializing in the study of bats who had developed an extract of a bat's sonar hearing and sonar sense intended to give humans suffering from hearing loss and deafness had tested the formula on himself because he was becoming deaf himself before doing so on others. In the end, the extract successfully worked, but ended up having a horrible side effect: transforming him gradually into a hideous humanoid bat-like monster.
