Ubisoft had bought back the rights to the first film in 2016 from 20th Century Studios, promptly selling it to Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures for future co-distributions, as well as rights to future sequels which contracted to produce Assassin's Creed films with Regency Enterprises, DMC Film and The Kennedy/Marshall Company entered a bidding competition to win the distribution rights.
