Jackson Williams is a top soldier for the IMC. When he was presumed dead in a ship explosion, he used that opportunity to leave his life behind knowing he would otherwise never be safe from the remnants of the IMC. Years later he moved and got married. His town was protected by Newcastle, who had secrets of his own: having sold off the town to pay off his debts. Thugs from a gang killed Newcastle when he couldn’t pay, unaware that Jackson was watching. He defeated the thugs and took on Newcastle's identity to do what Newcastle could not: get into the Apex Games. With the prize money, he could pay off the debts.
