Hank Pym discovered a new particle which he dubbed the “Pym Particle”, which he managed to uncover from analysing Janet’s mutant DNA. This new particle could be used to shrink or enlarge anything, putting Pym Tech on the map. Hank continued to make various scientific breakthroughs based on the Pym Particle, becoming very distant from his wife causing more frequent arguments between the two leading to Janet leaving hank. 2 years later, in the present, Pym Tech is failing as a company and Hank is a disgraced scientist. Due to this, Hank is forced to close multiple branches of his own company. This angers Simon Williams, a family man, who devoted everything to helping Pym Tech. Simon confronts Hank, who wants to help, but cannot. Simon begins to feel powerless and turns to his older brother, Eric, known to many as the criminal Grim Reaper. The Reaper takes Simon to a facility run by an underground think tank organisation called A.I.M. There, Simon to be hooked him up to a machine so they can experiment on his body. However, this procedure goes wrong and Simon is transformed into a being of pure ionic energy.
