Harry Angel, a New York private investigator is hired by Louis Cyphre to solve the disappearance of a man known as Johnny Favorite. His investigation takes him to New Orleans, where he learns that Favorite had dabbled in the black arts. As Favorite's whereabouts and true identity become more and more clear, Angel learns that being hired by Cyphre was not a random choice.
