Charlie Pentecost is a cynical, lonely man who seemingly has nothing to live for after his wife and children died in a car crash. One day, he meets Tom, an eleven-year-old boy whose deadbeat father is spending time in prison for tax evasion. Taking the boy under his wing, the two embark on a journey from Austin to San Francisco to reunite with his mother; along the way, the two form a friendship.
