Taïs was an athenian courtesan that accompanied the armies of Alexander. She was not a common prostitute, but an high trained and well educated woman (this kind of courtesan were called "hetairai"), and was chaperone of Ptolemy. While Alexander was in Persepolis, a fire burned down the royal palace. Diodorus suggests that Tais persuaded the drunken generals to burn the palace to avenge the destruction of Athens by Xerxes in 480 BC.
