Olympias, wife of Philip and mother of Alexander, was part of the Molossian royal family of Epyrus, a kingdom in western Greece, south of the border with modern-day Albania. Her family claimed to be descendants of Achilles. Olympias was a religious woman, devoted to Dionysus and initiated to orphic mysteries (involving the cult of snakes). Those kind of cults were not approved by many Macedonian nobles, and she started to have a complex and harsh relationship also with his husband. She was convinced that Zeus himself impregnated her. She was probably behind the assassination of Philip. She died in 317 BC after struggling for power in Macedonia with Cassander.
