Barsine was the daughter of Artabazus, satrap of Phrygia, and was married to Memnon of Rhodes, a Greek mercenary commander. After Alexander's victory at the Granicus river, she was sent to the royal court. When Alexander defeated Darius at Issus, he took her and the royal family prisoner, but he treated them kindly. Barsine eventually became Alexander's lover, and she gave birth to an illegitimate son, Heracles.
