Soroz is an AI personality for the Colossus of the Navigator. After the Darkover Crisis involving massive attacks by the Eclipsites 17 years ago, a few Caelestites managed to escape Eraveil. Soroz also took a Caelesite—the Navigator—and hid underground, isolated from the world. His systems were damaged during the escape, which trapped Navigator inside, and rendered Soroz unable to move. It wasn't until Vice appeared that Navigator was able to work with her to boot Soroz successfully again, and they were able to finally escape together.
