Young Adolf is a 20-year-old aspiring artist in Vienna, struggling to find his place in a rapidly changing world. Filled with grand delusions of becoming a painter, he applies to the Academy of Fine Arts, only to face crushing rejection. His failure sets the stage for his spiraling self-doubt, deepening insecurities, and alienation from society. Adolf becomes a drifter, living in a men’s shelter, surrounded by other outcasts. He develops an obsession with nationalism, blaming his failures on others, particularly immigrants and wealthy elites. The film portrays his interactions with a diverse cast of characters—fellow outcasts, political radicals, and disillusioned veterans—that shape his twisted worldview. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the outbreak of World War I provide Adolf with a purpose. He enlists in the German army, where the camaraderie and violence give him a sense of belonging. By the end of the film, Adolf is no longer the lost dreamer but a man hardened by war, bitterness, and burgeoning ideology.
