In the mid-19th century, Afro-American Solomon Northup lived as a free man with a wife and children in New York State. When two strangers engage the virtuoso violinist for a performance and then invite him over, he doesn't suspect anything. His horror is all the greater when he wakes up the next morning on a slave ship bound for Louisiana. All references to his guaranteed freedom rights are in vain. For twelve years, Solomon searches for a way out of slavery.
