Biography

Chaudhry Baldev Singh is a character from the iconic 1995 Hindi film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), portrayed by Amrish Puri. He is a strict, traditional father who holds strong values and beliefs, deeply rooted in his Indian culture and traditions, despite living in London. While he is stern and authoritative, he genuinely cares for his family and wants the best for them, especially his daughter Simran. Baldev Singh is a man of principles, insisting on maintaining his cultural identity and values, even in a foreign land. Baldev Singh is the father of Simran and the husband of Lajwanti. He moved to London after facing hardships in Punjab, including losing his farms to floods and being cheated by a cousin. His character is central to the film’s plot. He initially opposes Simran’s love for Raj, as he has already promised her hand in marriage to his friend’s son in India. However, through the course of the film, he transforms and gives his blessing to Simran and Raj’s union.
