American writer Holly Martins arrives in postwar Vienna to pursue a job offered by his longtime friend Harry Lime. Upon arrival, Martins learns that Lime has been killed in a recent car accident. However, the exact details of Lime's death, such as the number of people present, the amount of time Lime was able to stay conscious, and its status as an accident, are unclear. As Martins investigates further by meeting with Lime's friends and others involved, including his lover Anna Schmidt, he becomes entangled in a network of misinformation, uncertainty, and mystery.
